We are seeking a highly organised and detail-oriented Scientific Editor to join the editorial team of Brain, a world-leading journal in neurology and clinical neuroscience. Brain has published landmark papers in clinical neurology and translational neuroscience since 1878.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the publication process, working closely with the editorial team to ensure the delivery of high-quality content to an international audience.
The role
As Scientific Editor, you will be responsible for preparing manuscripts for publication and supporting the timely production of each issue to the highest possible standard. You will work collaboratively across editorial and production functions, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and adherence to journal style.
Key responsibilities
Prepare accepted manuscripts for publication, ensuring quality and consistency
Copyedit articles in line with journal style prior to typesetting
Proofread typeset articles using the publisher’s online proofing system
Liaise with authors post-acceptance to ensure clarity, accuracy, and compliance with journal standards
Support the editorial office in day-to-day operations, including providing cover where needed
Contribute to improving readability, formatting, and overall presentation of the journal
Ensure compliance of the journal with publishing best practice, research integrity policies and other wider publishing initiatives
Assist with issue collation and monthly production schedules
Undertake additional duties appropriate to the role as required
About you
You will be a motivated and proactive individual with strong editorial skills and a keen eye for detail and experience with digital scientific publications. You are confident balancing deadlines and prioritising work.
Essential skills and experience:
A bachelor's degree in a scientific field
Excellent written English
Copyediting skills, demonstrating ability to format and edit manuscripts for clarity, sense and to adhere to the Brain style guide
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
Strong organisational and time management skills
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Desirable:
A PhD in neuroscience or a related field
Previous editorial or publishing experience
Experience with research integrity, ensuring reliability, quality, and trustworthiness of research findings, upholding standards in methodology, reporting, and publication
Knowledge or experience of scientific figure creation, including digital software and image editing tools
Experience using Adobe suite tools
Familiarity with academic or scientific publishing workflows
Experience working with online proofing or manuscript submission systems

The Guarantors of Brain promotes teaching, education and research into the science of neurology and related clinical-academic disciplines. You will be part of a collaborative editorial team supporting a prestigious journal published by Oxford University Press. The role is primarily home-based within the UK, with occasional in-person meetings in London.
You will work closely with colleagues across editorial and production, contributing to the continued success and development of Brain as it evolves to meet the needs of authors and readers worldwide .
