This on-site role will require the post holder to work split campus, South Kensington and White City to lead and manage a cross campus multi-disciplined technical team and manage a varied departmental estate.

About the role:

The Engineering Technical Manager provides strategic leadership for the Department's mechanical, electrical, and mechatronic engineering capabilities, ensuring high-quality undergraduate teaching and research support across electronic and mechanical engineering disciplines. This senior leadership role oversees all departmental engineering laboratories, workshops, and makerspaces as both undergraduate teaching facilities and central departmental core facilities, ensuring adequate resources are available to meet departmental objectives through agile working practices and strategic resource allocation.

What you would be doing:

The post holder will manage specialist engineering leads (Electronics and Mechanics), actively enabling a culture of psychological safety, collaboration, and excellence within the engineering technical team and across the broader Bioengineering technical community. As a subject matter expert in either electronics or mechanical engineering, they will provide advanced technical guidance while maintaining strategic oversight of both domains.

This role is instrumental in maintaining the department’s commitment to excellence in teaching and research, serving as a key technical leader reporting directly to the Head of Technical Support and Safety, with responsibility for ensuring technical capabilities evolve to meet emerging educational and research demands.

What we are looking for:

  • Relevant Engineering degree (BEng/MEng) suitable for Chartered Engineer requirements
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and industry engagement
  • Demonstrated leadership in progressive engineering environments, , including managing technical professionals  
  • Substantial experience supporting undergraduate engineering education in higher education settings
  • Proven experience in agile resource management and priority setting in dynamic environments
