Overview of the role:

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Laboratory Manager to support the day-to-day operations, organisation, and scientific output of a dynamic research team.

The role involves ensuring efficient laboratory functioning, maintaining high health and safety standards, managing consumables, organising the lab, and maintaining equipment. You will train and support team members in experimental techniques and best practices, and assist with research projects.

Applicants should have a Life Sciences background (e.g. Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, or Molecular Genetics) and experience in mouse colony management, genotyping, mammalian cell culture, image analysis, single-cell sequencing, fluorescent imaging, and clearing methods. Strong organisational, communication, and broad molecular and cellular biology skills are essential.

Key responsibilities:

• Manage lab spaces, stock, and consumables ordering.
• Perform and supervise laboratory work (including undergraduate students).
• Develop and adapt experimental techniques and protocols.
• Train team members in equipment use and lab methods.
• Maintain lab hardware and software systems.
• Provide guidance and support to group members.
• Ensure high operational efficiency.
• Support compliance with Home Office licence requirements (e.g. BMS annual returns). 

Selection criteria:

• Educated to degree level in a biological science subject
• Relevant technical experience in the field of pathogen sequencing and laboratory management.
• Training and/or experience operating robotic systems for liquid handling, nucleic acid extraction, and next generation sequencers.
• Training and experience working autonomously in facilities that handle potentially dangerous pathogens.
• Experience leading administrative lab duties including use of database systems, writing / maintaining version-controlled protocols, using LIMS, using electronic laboratory records, writing risk assessment, consumables stock management.
• Experience with a range of nucleic acid extraction protocols, library preparation methods for unbiased conversion of total nucleic acid libraries, bait enrichment, and sequencing using different sequencer technologies.
• Possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes.
• Demonstrate a clear understanding of the molecular principles behind next generation sequencing, including extraction, library preparation, specific enrichment and depletion protocols.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Experience of promoting collaborative research environments for people from different backgrounds.
