About the role

The Bath Institute for the Augmented Human (IAH) is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Bath, bringing together experts from engineering, neuroscience, computer science, health, psychology, and design to advance technologies that enhance human capability and wellbeing. The Institute Manager will play a pivotal leadership role in shaping how this ambitious vision is delivered in practice.

This role sits at the heart of a nationally and internationally significant research and innovation ecosystem, supporting the development of partnerships, programmes, and operational systems that enable cutting-edge technologies to move from discovery into real-world application. The postholder will work closely with academic leaders, professional services, and external partners to ensure that the Institute continues to grow its influence, funding portfolio, and societal impact.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Driving strategic partnerships and growth: Lead engagement with industry, healthcare organisations, and international collaborators to expand the Institute’s research and innovation portfolio.
  • Delivering major interdisciplinary programmes: Coordinate complex activities that bring together diverse research teams to deliver high-impact projects aligned with the Institute’s strategic goals.
  • Strengthening governance and operational delivery: Develop effective systems, reporting processes, and operational frameworks that support sustainable growth and compliance.
  • Supporting innovation and translation: Help build an ecosystem that enables new technologies such as neurotechnology, robotics and prosthetics, and wearable systems to progress from research into real-world deployment.

The Institute Manager will work closely with the Director and Deputy Directors to support the delivery of the Institute’s strategy, identify new funding opportunities, and maintain strong connections with stakeholders across academia, industry, and healthcare. The role includes oversight of programme delivery, financial monitoring, reporting processes, and stakeholder engagement, ensuring that the Institute operates efficiently and maintains momentum in a rapidly evolving field.

As part of a dynamic and growing Institute established to position the University of Bath as a global hub in human augmentation research, this role offers the opportunity to shape the direction of major interdisciplinary initiatives and contribute to technologies that improve health, wellbeing, and human performance.

We welcome applications from individuals with a strong track record in programme delivery, partnership development, and operational leadership. We value diverse professional backgrounds and recognise that equivalent experience may come from academia, industry, healthcare, or innovation environments.

Desirable qualifications and experience

  • Master’s degree or PhD (or equivalent professional experience) in a relevant field.
  • Formal project management qualification (e.g., PRINCE2, APM, or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with technologies related to human augmentation, such as neurotechnology, exoskeletons, robotics, AI, wearable systems, or digital health.
  • Experience in industry or corporate engagement, including partnership development or contract development processes.
  • Experience of line management or supporting the development of professional teams.
  • Understanding of research funding landscapes and innovation ecosystems.
  • Experience working within large, multidisciplinary organisations or research environments.
