The role

The Centre for Academic Language and Development is seeking a STEM Programme Director to take a leading role contributing to the managing of our highly successful International Foundation Programme. The role involves coordinating the IFP (STEM) programme, as well as contributing to teaching on IFP STEM units (modules) relating to Biomedical Sciences and Research and Data Skills. The Programme Director is an academic “Pathway 3” role, focussed on teaching and scholarship.

This is an opportunity to work with highly motivated and engaged students at a significant moment in their education, developing their knowledge in their chosen science subjects as they prepare for undergraduate study at Bristol. You will bring your expertise in curriculum and assessment at level 3 teaching to ensure our IFP STEM programme remains at the forefront of innovative practice. In September 2026 our renewed “Curriculum26” launches, which incorporates several exciting initiatives relating to how we approach international foundation student education. You will have the opportunity to influence the direction of that activity.

We are a supportive but ambitious team, where all members have extensive expertise in teaching international students. We work collaboratively as a programme team to ensure the best overall education and experience for students. We are confident in our approach to how our programmes are run, but welcome new perspectives to develop both individuals and the centre provision.  In return we will actively support and stretch you in achieving your development goals. We have active scholarly interests in a range of areas, including science education, digital education, and academic literacy.

What will you be doing?

You will be:

  • overseeing all aspects of the IFP STEM Programme, working with other teaching staff on the programme, and teaching on STEM units Biomedical Sciences and Research and Data Skills
  • working closely with other programme (Business & Economics, Arts, Law, and Social Sciences) and thematic (Mathematics, English for Academic Purposes) directors, the Senior Personal Tutor, centre administration staff, and the Deputy Director (Head of IFP)
  • contributing to the management of staff in the centre, including line-managing responsibilities
  • engaging in scholarship relating to STEM education as appropriate for a Pathway 3 academic staff member

You should apply if

  • you have a good Honours degree in biomedical sciences, or related biosciences degree
  • you have extensive experience teaching students at level 3, in secondary, further, or higher education contexts,
  • you enjoy working in a busy, collaborative, and highly motivated environment centred on student engagement, experience, and success
