Here’s more about the role & what we’re looking for:

The postholder will work as part of a team to support & co-ordinate the daily operation of School technical facilities, using their knowledge & expertise to ensure compliance with health & safety regulations & the effective use of technical facilities, equipment & resources. This position delivers an invaluable contribution to the learning, teaching, & research aims of the school.

Thermo Fluids encompasses two labs in two separate buildings (Wolfson School & STEM). One lab is equipped with practical equipment & rigs covering both mechanical & fluid tutorials; the other lab houses equipment that is used in related taught classes & is also used for research purposes.

You will:

  • provide technical support for hands-on laboratory experiments facilitated by Module Leaders designed to promote self-learning & self-paced peer assisted tutorial work groups.
  • provide support to Academic teaching, PhD students, undergraduate students, & teaching staff within Wolfson School.
  • aid Research activities within the lab & enable the design & manufacture of various rigs & components.
  • provide supervision & advice to undergraduates when developing personal year projects.

About You

  • Experience of working in a laboratory, workshop or other technical facility & applying good Health & Safety practices in both teaching & research labs.
  • Experience of operating, testing & maintaining equipment that demonstrate thermodynamics, heat transfer & fluid dynamics - includes wind tunnels (both supersonic & sub-sonic), refrigeration & boiling rigs, concentric tube heat exchangers, Reynolds analogy rig.
  • Experience of working with hydraulic/pneumatic pressure systems, pressure vessels, hydrostatic pressure testing, cryogenics, gasses under pressure.
  • Ability to learn new skills, techniques, processes - commitment to ongoing professional development, including mandatory & role-specific training.
