The University of Reading is seeking to appoint a full-time, permanent Lecturer in Applied Linguistics and Digital Media to join the Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics.

The Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics at the University of Reading has a long-standing international reputation for excellence in teaching and research in Applied Linguistics and TESOL and was among the first departments in the UK to offer degree programmes in these areas. Today, the Department continues to build on this strong legacy while developing innovative directions in research and teaching. We are currently ranked 2nd in the UK for English Language and within the top 100 globally (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026). In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), the 83% our research was judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent, reflecting the strength and impact of our research environment.

Alongside our established expertise in Sociolinguistics, Phonetics, Psycholinguistics, Applied Linguistics, TESOL and Language Assessment, we are expanding our provision in Digital Media and Communication. We particularly welcome candidates with teaching and research experience in digital media and communication, with a focus on the communicative and pedagogical applications of emerging technologies, including Generative AI, and their implications for language, discourse, TESOL, and professional communication.

You will have:

  • Proven ability of producing research publications in high quality international journals
  • Experience of teaching in the areas of Digital Media and Communication as well as Applied Linguistics and/or TESOL at BA and/or MA levels
  • Research experience in digital media and communication, with a focus on the communicative, and/or pedagogical applications and implications of emerging technologies, including Generative AI
  • Experience of supervising dissertations or equivalent research projects at BA and/or MA levels.
  • Proven ability to apply for and attract research funding
