Background

Birmingham Medical School is seeking to appoint three Associate Clinical Professors as Deputy Leads for the Introductory Clinical Course (ICC), a core element of the MBChB Curriculum 2030.

The ICC is a new course for first- and second-year medical students, introducing essential clinical skills that will be developed throughout the five-year programme. These roles offer an exciting opportunity for experienced GP educators to shape early clinical education and inspire future doctors.

Post holders will be based primarily within the Birmingham Centre for Anatomy, Surgical and Clinical Skills, working closely with the General Practice Education Team, the Interactive Studies Unit, and Clinical Teaching Fellows.

This is a clinical academic appointment; applicants must be practising General Practitioners with experience in the UK NHS.

Role

Working with the ICC Lead, you will contribute to the academic leadership and operational delivery of campus-based ICC teaching. Key responsibilities include:

  • Day-to-day management of ICC campus-based teaching
  • Development, evaluation and updating of teaching materials, learning resources and assessments aligned with Curriculum 2030 outcomes
  • Shared leadership of the ICC and contribution to programme development
  • Shared line management of campus-based ICC GP tutors (initially 14, expanding to 28)
  • On-site oversight of teaching delivery on Tuesdays and Thursdays

You will demonstrate strong academic citizenship, fostering respectful and collaborative working relationships, and contributing positively to the wider life of the School and College. Work patterns may evolve as the programme develops.

Essential Criteria

Applicants must have:

  • A primary medical qualification (MBChB, MBBS or equivalent) and MRCGP
  • Registration on the GMC GP Register with a licence to practise
  • Evidence of current or recent NHS General Practice
  • Evidence of clinical appraisal and revalidation
  • Knowledge of GMC Outcomes for Doctors and the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA)
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, management and administration

Learning, Teaching and Leadership

Applicants should demonstrate an excellent teaching profile, including evidence of:

  • Excellence and innovation in teaching and assessment
  • Contributions to new programmes, curricula or educational resources
  • Educational leadership, mentoring and staff development
  • Sustained achievement in academic or clinical education leadership or management roles
  • A strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, including addressing inequalities through data-informed approaches

Interview and Presentation

Interviews are expected in early June 2026. Candidates will deliver a 10-minute presentation followed by questions.

Presentation title:

Incorporating clinical reasoning teaching and assessment into clinical learning for first-year medical students.

You should critique best practice and propose a 50-minute teaching session for 40 first-year medical students, delivered by two facilitators, incorporating these principles.
