Purpose of the Role

We are seeking an ambitious and technically strong Financial & Project Accountant to join our Finance team. Reporting to the Group Accountant, this role combines technical accounting expertise with high-impact finance business partnering.

You will support the College’s subsidiary companies and externally funded research projects, driving financial excellence, influencing decision-making, and delivering high-quality financial reporting and analysis. The role offers significant exposure across the organisation, working closely with senior leaders, budget holders and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Finance Business Partnering

  • Act as Finance Business Partner for subsidiary companies and externally funded research projects 
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, performance analysis and monthly management reporting 
  • Provide strategic financial insight to support operational and commercial decision-making 
  • Support budget holders and Principal Investigators in managing funded activities 

Financial & Technical Accounting

  • Support development of robust subsidiary and intercompany accounting, including transfer pricing compliance 
  • Contribute to year-end statutory accounts and group financial statements 
  • Maintain and develop the fixed asset register, ensuring accurate accounting for capital projects 
  • Prepare and review indirect tax returns, including VAT and PESM submissions 
  • Support management of restricted funds ensuring compliance and optimal utilisation 

Governance & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Liaise with internal stakeholders including Executive leaders and Heads of Service 
  • Represent Finance during interim and year-end audits 
  • Provide authoritative advice on accounting, VAT and financial management matters 
  • Identify improvements to financial reporting processes, systems and controls 

Team & Continuous Improvement

  • Mentor and support junior finance colleagues 
  • Contribute to development of financial policies and procedures 
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of accounting standards and regulatory requirements 

Person Specification

  • Newly qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA or equivalent) or above 
  • Strong technical financial accounting and reporting knowledge 
  • Experience producing group and subsidiary financial statements 
  • Fixed asset accounting experience 
  • Proven finance business partnering skills with excellent communication ability 
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience using finance ERP systems (e.g. Oracle, SAP, Unit4) 
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines and build effective stakeholder relationships
